This pictures shows the many pallet pieces being glued together to form an end grain butcher block top for the center island. Special glues and clamps are used in the process to form a seamless butcher block surface. End grain is much tougher than edge grain and much better for cutting boards, etc. After laminating the pieces together, they are sanded smooth in a large drum sander and then hand sanded to a final smoothness. Finally, the butcher block is treated with many coats of food grade mineral oil.
